Colorectal Cancer Awareness

Early Detection Saves Lives

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and the third leading cause of cancer deaths in Santa Barbara County. Up to 80% of these deaths could have been prevented.

How can you prevent Colorectal Cancer?

Have a screening test for colorectal cancer starting at age 45. Screening tests can find or prevent many cases of colon and rectal cancer. Several different tests can detect this cancer. Talk with your doctor to decide which is best for you.

Do you have a family history of Colorectal Cancer?

If so, you may need to be screened earlier than age 45. Here are clues to look for in your family:

  • Family history of colon cancer under age 45
  • Family history of endometrial cancer
  • Two or more closely related family members with colon or endometrial cancer at any age
  • More than one type of cancer in the same family member (i.e. colon and endometrial cancer)
  • Family history of a rare type of cancer (i.e. ovarian cancer, renal pelvis or ureter cancer)
